OpenAI's enterprise pivot is more interesting than its product pivot

OpenAI hired its third Chief Revenue Officer in 18 months. The product team is being reorganized around verticals. The plot has thickened.

By The Editors

The leaked internal memo describes it as a "go-to-market evolution." The numbers describe it as a pivot. OpenAI is reorganizing its product and sales teams around six enterprise verticals — financial services, healthcare, retail, legal, manufacturing, public sector — each with a dedicated GM, sales motion, and integration roadmap.

This isn't the story of a consumer AI company adding enterprise SKUs. This is the story of a company shifting its center of gravity.

The setup

ChatGPT subscriptions revenue is still growing but the growth rate is decelerating. The API business is still growing but margins are compressing as competitors price aggressively. The line item that's not compressing is enterprise contracts — six, seven, and eight-figure deals with companies that need someone to call when the model hallucinates a legal opinion.

OpenAI noticed.

Why this matters

Enterprise AI in 2026 is a knife fight. Microsoft has the channel. Google has the data. Anthropic has the safety positioning. AWS has the procurement relationship. OpenAI's bet is that brand and product velocity will overcome a comparatively thin enterprise muscle.

That bet requires verticalization, and verticalization requires hiring a lot of expensive humans. The new CRO is the third in 18 months, which is either an indictment of the strategy or a sign that the strategy is changing fast enough that nobody has had time to execute it.

The contrarian read

The interesting question is not whether OpenAI can win enterprise. It's whether the consumer ChatGPT business is now seen internally as a moat, a brand asset, or a tax. The org chart suggests the answer is "asset, but not the main event." That would have been heresy in 2024.

Twelve months from now we'll know.
